Google makes news, sort of.
Today Andy Rubin, Director of Mobile Platforms
for Google, did not announce the much rumored "G-Phone," but rather the Open Handset Alliance and Android. Rubin contends that this will be the "foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today."
Arguably, Android is considered the "first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices." Android sports the Linux operating system, a user-interface, Java, and applications.
Google has developed Android in cooperation with over than 30 technology and mobile companies, and hopes that this partnership leads to "an open ecosystem" for the mobile world, resulting in innovative applications, increased access to information to users wherever you are, regardless of platform. Google plans to have a Software Development Kit (SDK) released for next week.
This also provides for additional means for Google to provide services to you...and advertising, third-party services, and more ;-)
