Movie review... Mongol!

Joy of Tech - Sun, 06/08/2008 - 21:24

Sergei Bodrov's "Mongol" tells a remarkable story - that of the early years of Genghis Khan. Rather than embracing the well known views of a 'monster,' it looks at the beginning of his life.

Starting in 1172, we first see him as a boy, known by his birth name, Temudgin. Before beginnging a trying tale of hardship, he has the small joy of picking his bride, Borte - or rather, being picked by her. While returning home, his father, Esugei, the khan, is killed and left to die in his arms. No sooner than he could be buried, their tribe is taken over by a bitter warrior, Tarugtai, who claims the title of 'khan.' Tarugtai is cursed by Temudgin's mother, who swears that her son will get his revenge and reclaim the title that belonged to him. Soon exiled, Temudgin faces a long journey to survive and live up to his father's ideals of Mongol tradition. With Borte at his side, he is an unstoppable force, regardless of the roadblocks he faces.

Stunningly filmed in Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan, Bodrov executes his vision with great care to detail. As expected, there are many violent conflicts, but unlike '300,' they do not seem crass or thoroughly ridiculous. Fights on horseback are really on horseback and if CG was used anywhere, you certainly wouldn't know it. Costume, cast, setting, and even language (Mongolian with English subtitles) all belong, and take you deep into Mongolia and Temudgin's life. A fascinating war story, historical epic, and tale of romance -- "Mongol" is a great movie that all can enjoy. (You might not want to bring the kids - it is rated "R" for good reasons.)

Severn Cullis-Suzuki's speech at UN Earth Summit 1992 when she was 12 years old... wise words then, even wiser now. Hmm, does Obama need a Canadian running mate? :P

Monopoly on the iPod. (dibs on the race car)

MacMerc - Wed, 06/04/2008 - 08:12
This morning the classic board game of all classic board games was released for the iPod--Monopoly. As a dyed in the wool, "no money for landing on Free Parking," Monopoly purist, I have yet to find a computerized interpretation of this real estate conquest game that comes anywhere close to the sense of nostalgia that comes with the ritual of rolling the dice, buying up properties and hoarding...

Apple posts 240-page security configuration guide for Leopard. Take that, IT Dept.!

MacMerc - Tue, 06/03/2008 - 08:12
Considering Apple makes a big deal about the security of their products as well as that they are so simple to use they don't need to be accompanied by manuals, it might seem a little ironic that they have issued this 240-page manual entitled "Mac OS X Security Configuration for Version 10.5 Leopard". (Even the title is cumbersome!) I brief glancing over of the guide reveals that the guide is...
